Halifax is set to open its new $56-million central library this fall. The 129,000-square-foot building will have a spectacular view of the Halifax harbour, two cafes, a 300-seat theatre, and gaming stations.
Library use is increasing in Canada, says the Canadian Urban Libraries Council, which tracked an 18-percent increase in use between 2008 and 2013.
As a result of competition with the Internet and other sources of information, libraries are becoming more innovative–and it seems to be paying off. Calgary will open a new central library in 2018, and Toronto has been in a five-year program of renovating its central Reference Library, to name a few. Ottawa has been interested in a new central library for several years, and the Board of the Ottawa Public recently discussed hiring a consultant to develop plans.
